The Cherrington Scholarship is awarded in the spring of the IS Core in the Information Systems program. It is named after Dr. J. Owen Cherrington who taught and advocated for Information Systems when it was housed in the School of Accountancy and Information Systems. Dr. Cherrington continues to be remembered for his great example of hard work and selfless service. The Cherrington Scholarship is awarded to students who are examples of hard work and selfless service, the same attributes that Dr. Cherrington exemplified during his life.

The five recipients of the Cherrington scholarship for 2019 are Cash Allred, Autumn Clark, Demitri Haddad, Ashleigh Koener, and Adam Peterson. These students were nominated by faculty members and fellow classmates because they exemplify helpfulness and kindness to their fellow core students. Cash, Autumn, Demitri, Ashleigh, and Adam are all highly praised by students and faculty for their hard work and service to others. Each of these students work diligently on their personal studies and are very willing help the people in their program with anything they need.

Let’s get to know a little bit more about these amazing students.

Cash Allred grew up on a farm in Redmond, Utah, a small town of about 800 people. He is a new, and very proud, father. He enjoys ice fishing, wrestling, and date nights with his wife. Cash is excited to be working at Lucid Software this summer as a part of their Strategy and Analytics team. Cash is constantly looking for ways to serve others and lift those around him. Cash is known as “a great student and an even greater example of how to treat others! He looks for opportunities to help his peers and lift them up. He radiates goodness and is a great example of how the Savior would want us to act. Cash sees the value in serving others and does so willingly. He represents the values of the Cherrington Scholarship.”

Autumn Clark, who grew up in Cardston, Alberta, loves skiing and anything related to music. She loves taking unplanned road trips and traveling around the world with a few of her favorite places she’s visited being Hong Kong, Prague, and Istanbul. Autumn enjoys participating in case competitions which is how she was able to land her internship with Adobe in San Jose. She will be working with Cloud Tech Solutions Architecture. One classmate said of Autumn that “she consistently expresses a humble attitude and empathy for others. She truly gets excited about her peers’ success and demonstrates empathy to her fellow friends in time of need.”

Demitri Haddad, from Pleasanton, California, will continue working this summer as a web developer for BYU. His development team is responsible for creating a new employment portal for student jobs and implementing an online ordering system for the university. Demitri is in the chapter presidency of the Utah College Republicans, received his scuba certification this semester, and helped Penguin Brothers open their first store here in Provo. The following remark about Demitri illustrates the kind of person he is: “Demitri has been an exemplification of being selfless in his own academic studies to improve the experience of others education. For myself and many others, Demitri has taken time out of his own personal studies to explain, coach, and direct regardless of the time of the day or his own personal workload.”

Ashleigh Koener, from Phoenix, Arizona, has always been willing to help other core students out. According to a fellow student, “she is always helping and willing to share everything she has, be that time, knowledge, or resources.” Ashleigh will be staying in Provo working as the Lead Systems Administrator at the Missionary Training Center. She also has a side job as the executive assistant and as an actress for Magic Princess Parties where her favorite princesses to be are Ariel, Rapunzel, and Belle. Ashleigh loves sports, especially softball, volleyball, and tennis.

Adam Peterson, from Carson City, Nevada, has always been ready to help students around him. One classmate remarked that “Adam has made my experience in the core, and I believe many others’ as well, very meaningful– I’ve been able to make a new friend and understand the material much better than I would have.” Adam is excited to be staying in Provo and interning at Tax Hawk where he will be doing Java Software Development. Adam served his mission in Moscow, Russia, and enjoys camping, backpacking, and rock climbing.

The Cherrington Scholarship is a great reminder that although school can be stressful and competitive, helping each other is how to move forward. Cash, Autumn, Demitri, Ashleigh, and Adam have been incredible examples this year of selfless service and each has a bright future ahead of them.

The Owen Cherrington Scholarship is named in honor of Professor J. Owen Cherrington who was the founding director of the Rollins Center for eBusiness, which merged in 2009 with the Center for Entrepreneurship to become the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology. Professor Cherrington was a great example of hard work, selfless service, diligence, faith, and total integrity. He died of cancer in 2005 after fighting a brain tumor for more than two years, but his example of kindness lives on with this IS student scholarship given in his name.
