Meet Whitney Gregory, a second-year BSIS student who loves traveling. Going to Richmond, Virginia to intern at McKesson Corporation has set her up for future adventures.

Whitney lives life by chance, going wherever she feels drawn. When choosing what to study, she liked computer science but felt drawn to the business school. She then found information systems — a combination of computers and business. “It was just a random pick that happened to work out perfectly,” she said.

The IS Core gave her the boost she needed to take on her interning adventure. It provided her with the technical skills to work on McKesson’s data analytics team, but more importantly, it gave her the ability to self-teach. “I felt confident walking into work every day because I knew I could learn whatever I needed for the job.”

She encourages IS Core students to stop stressing about getting the best grades and even finding an internship early. “Focus on the learning because that’s what matters at the job.”

Whitney quickly picked up Azure ML and Power BI skills so she could meaningfully contribute to the team’s various projects. Her team used machine-learning on one project to analyze which products patients were likely to buy based on their medical diagnoses.

Working at McKesson helped Whitney see the possibilities for young IS professionals. “The company has a rotation program for tech positions, so you can go work in different locations,” she explained. “I had co-workers in India!”

Whitney anticipates visiting all the Walt Disney resorts, so a dream job would be anything she could do remotely. “I want to do something engaging, something that gives your mind a workout!” she says. With a love for traveling and tech, there’s no limit to the adventures ahead of her.
