Anytime someone enters the IS department office with a question or needing help, Business Manager Ashlyn Lewis has a solution. Nominated because of her respect for sacred resources, Ashlyn was awarded BYU’s SAERA Award in January 2020.

The Staff and Administrative Employee Recognition Awards are based on “a set of values” that the President’s Council “has adopted for all BYU staff and administrative employees.” This award “recognizes the demonstration of these values.” Employees are nominated to receive this award in one of eight categories: Competency, Respect for Sacred Resources, Integrity, Teamwork, Exceeding Customer Expectations, Respect for All Individuals, Innovation, and Accountability and Results. We are lucky enough to have a recipient of this award working in the IS department.

Department chair, Dr. Bonnie Anderson stated:

“Ashlyn Lewis does a great job managing resources and looking for ways to save costs. She works with faculty members to ensure expenses are necessary. She helps faculty members find cheaper accommodations for academic conferences. She also keeps a close eye on student employee hours. She takes the time to dig into the details of unusual activity to determine the accuracy of the reported hours. Ashlyn is willing to have the uncomfortable conversations with TAs, RAs, and faculty members. I appreciate her attention to detail and willingness to track down and confront the issues.”

Ashlyn joined the IS department in 2016 and has since made many improvements to the department. She has a passion for IS and loves to understand how things work and how technology can be used better in the workplace. Not only is she a full-time employee, but she also is a mother of three and an IS student. Looking to earn her bachelor’s degree in IS, she has taken many classes and looks to apply what she is learning each day. She really cares about learning the material and using her knowledge!

Ashlyn also uses her creativity to help keep the IS students engaged with the department. For example, Ashlyn designs stickers for the IS students to collect as they progress and earn different achievements during the program. These can be collected and put on water bottles, laptops, etc. Dr. Anderson continued to say, “Ashlyn’s cheerful attitude and design skills (especially with the stickers) have brought great energy to the department.” These stickers, designed by Ashlyn, were the recipient of the Grand Prize at the Silver Scoop Awards (an award given for the best communications materials within BYU Marriott).

We are grateful for all that Ashlyn Lewis does for the BYU IS community!
