Intern Spotlight: Nathan Turner

2nd Year MISM student Nathan Turner has discovered that whether on a normal day or during a global pandemic, Adobe holds to its core values: genuine, exceptional, innovative, and involved. Turner, who interned at Adobe for the second time over the summer said, “Adobe holds to their core values with a lot of faithfulness. They are extremely important to the company and the way they do business. It is awesome to see a company that does not just come up with value statements but really lives by their values.”

Nathan worked as a full stack software engineering intern on Adobe’s experience cloud products (IS solutions division). He was a part of the data science new products organization that creates innovative services that help other businesses conduct marketing-related efforts. His team provides the infrastructure for the data scientists of the DSNP organization to effectively create, store, and productize intelligent services.

Working on the same project as last year, some of his responsibilities included developing the front-end application, understanding the back-end system to provide functionality, and experimenting with GraphQL to create machine learning applications. Part of his team also worked on the backend and created the infrastructure, database, and entities for the applications. He enjoyed working on a team where he could understand the business purpose behind what he was doing, working on specific problems where his team could provide solutions.

Nathan obtained his internship through networking in the IS core. During his first INTEX in the IS core, one of his group members suggested that they have her brother-in-law (a MISM alum working at Adobe) come and critique their presentation. Nathan explained, “He was really impressed with what we had done, and I had the chance to talk to him and ask him about internship opportunities. A few months later, I had the chance to interview with him to be a part of his team and now he is my mentor at Adobe. I got this chance through the IS program.”

Adobe did a great job of making the internship experience meaningful through the pandemic. Apart from being virtual, Nathan was able to work on his team and attend an online summit for interns.

Nathan stated, “Going online, I do miss all of the interactions, but Adobe is a great company at large and, in my team, there is so much energy and innovation because they are working on such cutting-edge technologies. Adobe has the energy and excitement of a small company while having the infrastructure of a large company which is why Adobe is at the forefront of so many innovative approaches and technologies inside the world of the digital experience.”

Nathan advises future IS students to value the connections you make in the IS program. The IS program and the BYU Marriott School of Business provide many opportunities to meet recruiters and connect with BYU Alumni to help students find internships and jobs. These connections will last well after graduation.
