Intern Spotlight: Ching Tong

As a second year MISM student, Ching Tong was offered her dream job as a consultant for Pariveda Solutions. She loves solving problems for companies and is excited to start work soon. How did she land her dream job? It all started with an internship with Pariveda over the summer.

When Ching was in the IS core, she became interested in Pariveda as a company. She attended all the activities the company held, and this led to invites to Pariveda’s recruiting events. Although she applied for an internship after the IS core, she did not initially get an internship spot. She was encouraged to apply again after her first year as an MISM student when she had more experience.

After reaching out to Pariveda and lots of interviewing and hard work, Ching landed a position as a software consulting intern at Pariveda in Houston, Texas. In this position, she helped develop a mobile application for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Her first week in Texas, Ching was trained on the new programming language she would be using and then spent her time in pair programming. Every Monday and Friday she had the opportunity to meet with the client, ask questions, and demonstrate the project’s progress.

Pariveda is a great place to work because of the open company culture. Ching was never afraid to ask for help and this helped her grow as an employee. She worked with a mentor and manager and loved being able to interact with the management team. The work was always new, and she had the chance to learn different technologies. She said that consulting at Pariveda is a perfect fit for her because of the great work-life balance.

Ching found that the JavaScript and React she learned in the IS core were the most helpful skills during her internship. At first, she felt unsure about her coding abilities compared to other interns but soon found out that the IS Core had prepared her with development skills equal to the computer science majors around her.

Ching advises future interns to be willing to ask for help. She explained that internships are so short that she needed to work quickly, accept help, and help others. She is excited about her future with Pariveda and in the IS field. She loves that in Information Systems, people are only bound by their own creativity.
