Graduate Studies Welcomes 2nd Year MISM Students

Graduate Studies Welcoming the 2nd Year MISM Students

BYU Graduate Studies welcomed 41 MISM students at the New Graduate Student Dinner on September 12, 2019. The MISM program had the largest percentage of students represented at the event of all the Marriott School graduate programs.

While most graduate students are only beginning to meet professors and their fellow students, most MISM students have known each other since the undergraduate IS core because of their opportunity to participate in an integrated program. These now 2nd Year MISM students enjoyed dinner with the friendships that they have gained over the last two years in the Information Systems program.

Adding to the excitement, Jesse Nelson (a current 2nd year MISM student) heard his name drawn and won $1000. He stated, “When my ticket number was read off, it was a little surreal. I never expected to actually win! Then as soon as I stood up to claim the award, the IS students in attendance started to cheer and clap. I was overwhelmed by the support they showed, and truly hold each of them not just as fellow students or peers, but as friends in my IS family.”

The $1000 won by Nelson will be used for professional development to enhance his education. Students became eligible for the drawing by attending the New Graduate Studies Fair and attending the different booths identifying campus resources available to new graduate students.

The dean of BYU Graduate Studies, John “Keoni” S.K. Kauwe, spoke to the students about his experiences in graduate school and what he did to make it a great experience. This group of MISM students are now acquainted with graduate school, introduced to the BYU Graduate Student Society, and ready for their information systems graduate studies.
